New Zealand likes its sheep (and cows). It’s big business over here. In fact, Beef + Lamb New Zealand Inc. is hosting a giveaway where the winner receives a year’s supply of beef and lamb.

NZ exports over 80% of the mutton and lamb it produces. They provide roughly 30% of the lamb/mutton available for commercial sale in the States, and almost 60% of what is sold in the EU. This translates into approximately $3 billion in annual revenue.

NZ also exports live sheep, wool and wool products, lanolin, and 1/3 of the world’s dairy supply.

So… are the sheep jokes justified? Probably, in a way. There are around 4 million people living in New Zealand. There are somewhere between 30-40 million sheep. You do the math.
