When a Kiwi says she needs to consult her diary, she isn’t referring to what most Americans think of as a personal journal.
A diary here in Aotearoa means a datebook, or calendar.

According to the Online Etymological Dictionary, the word diary comes from the Latin diarium, a derivative of the Latin word for day. So their usage makes sense, it’s just unusual to Americans.
