The classic American debate: is it soda or pop?
(Of course, there’s the odd person who might say “coke” or “sodapop,” but I’m going to ignore them for the moment.)

Growing up in NY, it was always soda. After moving to Ohio, I rarely heard the word. Working in the local restaurants, I learned to say “pop” if I wanted to make myself understood and avoid ridicule.

Here in NZ, there is no soda vs. pop debate. Carbonated soft drinks are known as fizzy drinks, or fizzies, for short. Simple. Straightforward. No one’s going to puzzle over what you’re talking about because it’s so damn obvious.

As far as I’m concerned, from this point forward in the great soda vs. pop debate, fizzies = win.
