Just about everyone under the age of, oh, say 65 goes barefoot in this country. Shoes are not required for admission to any sort of establishment or event.
Apparently some doctor back in the day suggested that allowing the little ones to roam about barefoot was good for them – it toughened up the soles of their feet and allowed them to do things like walk on broken glass w/o a problem.
I, being a pansy-ass American, have a few hang-ups about sharp objects, blisters, bees, the possibility of contracting communicable diseases. But I have to admit, I sort of like the laid-back attitude.
