Friends in New Zealand are mates, not buddies, pals, or homies.
I can’t imagine a single guy I know in the States calling another guy his mate, but here in NZ, that’s just how it is.

And there’s no such phrase as “good for you.” (Or “way to go.”) It’s “good on you.”

One thing I can say is that living here in Aotearoa has definitely made me much more aware of the (many) distinctively American idioms that I use.
